A Monthly Budget Reset That Starts With Reality
Look for missing costs before blaming your willpower.

The essentials
The CFPB recommends reviewing actual spending and including savings in a budget. Start with last month’s account and card records rather than an idealized target.
Put it into practice
Separate fixed, variable and irregular costs. Divide an annual fee by twelve to estimate a monthly provision. Check that a transfer or card repayment has not counted the same expense twice, and leave a line for cash purchases.
What to check
Put income dates and bill dates on a calendar to expose shortfalls within the month. Change one category next month and compare. This is an organizing method, not a recommendation for a financial product or personal savings target.
